Set the paper size to 4×6 on a Zebra

  • Set the ZDesigner stock to 4.00 x 6.00 in with Gap media type for die-cut label rolls.
  • Set dithering to none and Print scaling to None for barcode sharpness.
  • Set darkness between 15 and 20 for direct thermal labels at 203 dpi.
  • Run Calibrate Media from the Tools tab, or hold the feed button until the status light flashes, after every roll change.

Mac

  1. 1macOS includes a Zebra CUPS driver; add the printer in System Settings, Printers & Scanners and pick the ZPL driver for your model.
  2. 2In the print dialog set Paper Size to 4.00 x 6.00 in.
  3. 3Set Scale to 100% and uncheck Scale to fit.
  4. 4Open Printer Features, set Darkness 15 and Speed 4 ips, and choose Gap media.
  5. 5Save as a Preset named Zebra 4x6.

Windows

  1. 1Install ZDesigner from Zebra, then open Printing preferences for the printer.
  2. 2On the Options tab set Size to 4.00 x 6.00 in and Darkness to 15.
  3. 3On the Advanced Setup tab set Media type to Gap and run Calibrate Media.
  4. 4Open Advanced Options and set Print scaling to None, dithering None.
  5. 5Apply, then print the converted PDF at Actual size with Fit to page off.

iPhone

  1. 1Use Zebra Printer Setup Utility for a ZD421 or another Bluetooth or Wi-Fi model; older USB-only units need a computer.
  2. 2Convert the label above and save the 4 × 6 PDF to Files.
  3. 3Share the PDF to the Zebra app, or print through AirPrint on network models with Paper Size 4 x 6 in.
  4. 4Leave any Fit to page option off so the ZPL is not rescaled.

Android

  1. 1Install Zebra Printer Setup Utility or Mopria Print Service and pair the printer.
  2. 2Open the converted PDF and choose Print.
  3. 3Set Paper size 4 x 6 in and Scale 100%.
  4. 4If the app offers a print density setting, set it to about 75% of maximum.

Fix labels that print tiny, off-center or across two labels

The label prints small with white space around it
The driver still has Letter or a custom size. Set the stock to 4.00 x 6.00 in and set Print scaling to None, then print the converted 4 × 6 file.
The printer feeds one blank label between every print
Media calibration. Run Calibrate Media in the driver, or hold the feed button until the light flashes once and release.
The label prints across two labels
The printer is set to continuous media. Change Media type to Gap or Web sensing, then recalibrate.
The barcode is dark and smudged
Darkness is too high for the stock. Drop to around 12 to 15 and print at 4 ips. Also clean the printhead with alcohol.
Half the label is blank or streaked vertically
A dirty or failing printhead. Clean it with a printhead pen; a permanent thin white line means a burnt element and needs a new head.
The label prints upside down
A saved ZPL rotation in the printer. Set rotation to 0 in the driver, or send ^POI/^PON in ZPL Setup to flip the orientation back.

About Zebra drivers

Zebra drivers come in two flavours: the ZDesigner driver, which exposes stock sizes and darkness, and the Seagull driver bundled with some resellers. Either works. The one thing you must do on a used printer is a media calibration, because saved label lengths in the printer's memory override what the driver sends.

Should I use the ZDesigner driver or the Windows built-in one?

Use ZDesigner. The built-in driver often lacks the 4 × 6 stock and the darkness control.

What darkness works best on a ZD410?

15 of 30 for most direct-thermal shipping labels. Go up to 20 for glossy stock, down to 10 if bars bleed.

How do I calibrate a Zebra?

With the roll loaded, hold the feed button until the status light flashes once, then release. The printer feeds a couple of labels and learns the gap.

Can I use a second-hand Zebra from eBay for shipping labels?

Yes. Reset it to factory defaults first, since saved label lengths and rotations from a previous owner cause most odd prints.

Do I need ZPL files instead of PDFs?

No. The driver converts the 4 × 6 PDF to ZPL. Direct ZPL is only useful for very high volume printing.
